Record Store Day celebrates independent retail music sellers who have endured long after megastores like Tower Records closed

The annual event, which began in 2008 as a way to celebrate the people who work at and frequent indie record stores, has been embraced by musicians and bands of all sizes and genres.

From a new Taylor Swift to an exclusive Pearl Jam "Dark Matter" vinyl, Record Store Day 2024 will be a big one for record stores in the Philadelphia area and worldwide.

Most record stores across the US will be participating in 2024’s Record Store Day, depending on your location. Those in major cities will have (at least) one spot open tomorrow. For international fans, they also have official sites in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the UK, and more countries.

Hundreds of people sit in the cold and wait for the doors of Dearborn Music to open, just for a chance to get their hands on an exclusive record.

Squeezebox normally opens at noon, but for Record Store Day it opens at 10 a.m. It's one of the biggest revenue days of the year for independent record stores.

Perched at the end of a residential street just off Sahara Avenue, a faded mauve building sticks out like a sore thumb amid the other beige houses. The renovated residential home is Record City, one of Las Vegas’ oldest record stores

If it isn't the best day to boost a type of business, the resurgence of vinyl makes April 20 the loudest of them.

Saturday, April 20, is the 17th annual Record Store Day. Exclusive vinyl record releases come out from the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and more.

"We've been here since the beginning for Record Store Day, and watched it kind of evolve," John Beggs, owner of Roadrunner Records, said.

The annual event started back in the late 2000s to celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store.
